The Macleans of Ardgour
The Macleans of Ardgour were granted title to the lands of Ardgour by James IV in 1494 and have owned the estate continuously since then. At the time of the 1745 uprising the Laird was a minor and a neighbouring Chieftain led the clan at Culloden. Because of this, and unusually for the West Highlands, the estate was not forfeited in those troubled times and is one of the few where uninterrupted ownership can be traced for nearly 600 years.
The family lived on the site of Ardgour House since 1542 and the cellars of the present building date from that time.

|
The central portion of the House was completed in 1765. However it was completely remodelled in late Georgian times and reflects that era.
Although retaining most of the estate, the present Laird sold the House in 1995, allowing it to be upgraded and offered as a unique self catering venue. It is said that should the waterfall (named Macleans Towel) behind the House dry up, the Macleans will leave Ardgour
